Harnessing Microbial Genomics for Strategic Health Interventions

Kalai Mathee merges world-class expertise in microbial pathogenesis with a population-health outlook. With a PhD in Microbiology, an MPH in Global Health, and Fellowship in the Royal Society of Biology, she serves as Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Miami, driving advances in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and translational microbiology.

Kalai’s Areas of Expertise:

  • Pioneered Pseudomonas aeruginosa Genomics: Led foundational studies mapping genomic diversity and resistance mechanisms, informing novel antimicrobial targets and stewardship protocols

  • Integrated Molecular Microbiology & Epidemiology: Designed and executed multi-site surveillance projects across Latin America and the Caribbean to track emerging AMR threats and guide public-health policy

  • Translated Bench Discoveries into Diagnostics: Spearheaded development of rapid molecular assays for pathogen identification and resistance profiling, enabling hospital systems to optimize infection control

  • Advised Biotech & Pharma Partners: Consulted on strategic pipeline prioritization for novel antibiotics and microbiome therapeutics, aligning R&D portfolios with clinical needs and regulatory pathways

  • Secured & Managed Multi-Million-Dollar Grants: Awarded NIH, CDC, and international foundation funding, overseeing cross-disciplinary teams and collaborations spanning academia, government, and industry

  • Expert Communicator & Educator: Crafts compelling scientific narratives for diverse audiences—through peer-reviewed publications, keynote presentations, graphic abstracts, and stakeholder workshops—bridging technical detail with strategic insight
